Conference Sundae... notice what I did there? haha
We have had a tradition the last few years to encourage active participation as well as reverence in General Conference. We spend the sessions earning points and after the last session on Sunday, instead of dinner, we build Sundaes with our points. The kids love it. And so do Mom and Dad!
Here's a breakdown of what earns the points and what the different toppings cost. They get a free 10 points just for attending a session and sitting quietly. I want it to be their choice to come, rather than feeling like they HAVE to... especially on Saturday. They get 2 points for taking at least 5 notes on each talk. The younger get 2 points if they draw a picture about the talk. They get 1 point for a picture colored. And if they fight, they lose a point. Then at the end, a scoop of ice cream costs 10 points, a large topping like a cookie costs 5 points and a small topping like caramel or fudge costs 2 points. You should see their eyes as they build their sundaes... It is hilarious!
The girls take such neat notes and it is fun to compare and see what they picked out of the different talks. They keep them in a notebook so they can look at them later. I'm not sure they ever do... but maybe someday? We get so much more out of conference without all the distractions that previous methods of participation have created. This works for us and we all enjoy it. Plus it's just a fun tradition!
These kids earn A LOT of points! In years past we have had them use points and build their sundae and then later in the week they do it again to finish their points. This year we did it a little different and had the kids build one giant sundae that they could then put in the freezer and eat from during the week. I think we will stick with that. Rather than pile their candy all over the ice cream, many of them opted to keep it separate for enjoyment later. Smart!
