We had Stake Conference weekend before last and Chad and I decided that our lives were in serious need of some renovating! Among other things, we've now made it a goal to get up at 6 every morning so we can spend 20 minutes on personal scripture study. That frees up the evening so that we can now spend time studying the scriptures as a family. We've set an alarm for the evening so that it doesn't matter what we get ourselves involved in... the alarm doesn't allow us to forget! This has worked well for us, you can imagine. So far things have been working out really well. Except that our 9 month old daughter doesn't seem to appreciate the length of the chapters in the Book of Mormon. hmmmm. So now we're struggling to come up with some age-appropriate study so that our daughter can learn to appreciate scripture study rather than just endure it. Obviously I don't expect her to sit quietly for 10 minutes with her arms folded and her head bowed in reverance of what we're attempting here but the idea is to make the effort to have it be something directed and geared specially for her. You know, establish the pattern. Any ideas that have worked for you?

The best thing that has worked for me to get Luis to listen during scripture study is I give him lots of sweets so that he will enjoy the time and learn at the same time!
Well, you see... by my fifth child... I had this down. All you need is to make every chapter into a movie that you show. So, you spend your days preparing, then you sit down and watch it as a family. VERY EFFECTIVE!
We read the little book of mormon reader thing with our kids for family scriptures. It has lots of pictures and words that are easier to understand. Our kids love to sit and look at the pictures. They do have it on DVD too, (Natalie's wasting her time making her own--ha ha!) and you can get them from the distribution center. Someday we'll move on to reading the "real" book of mormon with them, but for now, We're just trying to get them to love reading the scriptures and establish the habbit.
My advice, something for her to hold. If our girls are holding a picture or a puppet of Nephi or whatever they seem to hold still a little longer and seem to be more excited about reading the scriptures or the Ensign. Just making it more interactive seems to help. But somedays nothing seems to help and it's on those days we rush through it a little faster!
